Most people remember when email inboxes became unusable. Not because email was broken, but because sending ten million messages became cheaper than sending ten. The technology did not create spam. The economics did. Once the cost of distribution collapsed to nearly zero, volume became the strategy and quality became irrelevant.

That logic is now running again, this time through AI-generated content. Producing ten thousand articles now costs roughly what producing ten used to, and for anyone willing to trade quality for quantity, the opportunity is obvious: flood the zone, capture traffic, monetize the attention before the reader realizes the content was worthless. The result has a name: AI slop. It is the mass production of text, images, and video that looks like information, sounds like expertise, and offers neither.

How to recognize it

AI slop is not always obvious, but it has characteristic patterns that become harder to unsee once you know them.

The piece answers the question in its title and stops there, offering no original perspective, no concrete example, no specific knowledge that couldn’t have been inferred from the headline alone. Every paragraph opens with a transition: “Furthermore.” “Additionally.” “It is worth noting that.” Real writers do this occasionally. Language models do it constantly. The tone stays uniformly enthusiastic regardless of subject, because AI content is affirmative by default. Real writing has friction, qualification, moments where the author contradicts themselves or admits they’re not sure. Statistics appear without sources, or the sources don’t contain the statistics. Precise figures in AI-generated text are often plausible but fabricated, and any number without a clear citation should be treated as suspect.

Then there is the author, or the absence of one. The listed name has no traceable history, no other work, no professional presence. It exists to fill a field, not to stand behind the writing. The site publishes at high volume across dozens of unrelated topics, because genuine expertise is narrow and volume across everything is a production signal, not a quality signal. The images are technically polished and subtly wrong: too many fingers, perspectives that don’t hold, faces symmetrical in a way real faces never are. The prose is grammatically flawless and emotionally absent. It never states an opinion the author might regret, never commits to anything strongly enough to be wrong.

No single signal is definitive. Good writers use transitions. Legitimate publications cover many topics. But when several of these patterns appear together, the content was almost certainly generated, reviewed minimally or not at all, and published for reasons that have nothing to do with informing you.

An ethics question dressed as a technology question

There is a version of this conversation that treats AI slop as a technical problem with a technical solution: better detection tools, better platform filtering, better search algorithms. Those would help. But they target the symptoms and not the decision that produced it.

The people generating slop at scale are making a choice. They are choosing to use a powerful tool in a way that degrades shared information resources, makes it harder for readers to find accurate information, and contributes nothing of value in exchange for the attention they capture. That is a decision to strip-mine a commons, to extract private profit while pushing the cost of filtering and verification onto everyone else. The fact that the system produces bad incentives does not eliminate individual responsibility for acting on them. The same logic applies to spam, to predatory lending, to every practice that degrades something shared for private gain. Pointing at corporate incentives is an explanation, not an absolution.

What is actually at stake

The most consequential harm from AI slop is one that almost no one is talking about yet: the feedback loop. AI systems used to generate slop are themselves trained on internet content. More slop on the internet means future language models trained on worse material, producing outputs of lower quality, which then get published at scale and feed the next round of training. The damage compounds quietly, and by the time it is visible it will already be structural.

The more immediate harm is real enough on their own. Finding accurate information is getting harder. Search engines optimized for engagement rather than accuracy are easily exploited by high-volume content, and a reader trying to understand a medical symptom, a legal question, or a financial decision is increasingly likely to encounter something that sounds authoritative and contains nothing reliable. Trust erodes faster than it builds. When people cannot distinguish good-faith writing from generated filler, they begin distrusting both, and that distrust does not stay neatly targeted at slop. It spreads. Writers, journalists, illustrators, and researchers who produce original work are competing for attention in an environment flooded with content that costs almost nothing to produce, and there is no market mechanism that automatically rewards the difference in quality.

Volume was always the wrong measure

Spam is often held up as a problem the internet solved. Filters improved, inboxes became usable again, and the crisis faded from public attention. But that framing obscures what actually happened. Spam was not eliminated. The cost of managing it was redistributed, and the powerful took advantage of that shift.

Deliverability is now effectively controlled by a small number of corporations. Google, Apple, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Spamhaus set the rules for what reaches an inbox, and those rules favor domains with established reputation, high volume, and institutional infrastructure. A large content farm with a recognized domain clears the filter. A small legitimate sender on an unfamiliar domain gets flagged, delayed, or silently discarded. The spam problem was solved by handing the keys to a few gatekeepers and accepting that smaller actors would pay the price.

There is no reason to expect AI slop to resolve differently. The likely outcome is not elimination but consolidation. Search algorithms already favor established domains and high-authority publishers. If AI-detection filtering gets built into platforms at scale, it will fall hardest on independent voices who lack the institutional credibility to get a pass.

What made spam damaging was not just the volume. It was that managing the volume became a justification for concentrating control over shared infrastructure. The same logic is already forming around AI content. The question of who gets to decide what counts as slop and what counts as legitimate writing is not a technical question. It is a question about who controls the information environment. The answer will be determined less by what is true than by who has the leverage to define it.
